Resilience isn’t built in one big gesture. It’s built in small, sensible steps — the kind you can do in minutes, and that make the “what if?” far easier to manage.

UK Government guidance suggests a few simple actions most households can take right now:

5 quick wins (do one today):

  1. Check if you (or someone you care for) should be on your utilities’ Priority Services Register.
  2. Set a monthly reminder to test your smoke alarms.
  3. Write down key numbers on paper (including the power-cut line 105 in England/Scotland/Wales) and keep them somewhere easy to find.
  4. Talk with children about how and when to call 999.
  5. Check your flood risk and sign up for relevant flood/weather warnings.

🧰 If you can spare 10 more minutes:
• Make a simple household plan (escape routes, a meeting point, key info).
• Consider a basic emergency kit: torch (safer than candles), power bank, radio, spare batteries, first aid items, wipes/hand sanitiser, bottled water (WHO suggests 2.5–3L drinking water per person per day; 10L supports cooking/hygiene too), and easy food (plus baby/pet essentials if needed). Build it up over time.

At The Panic Room Company, we’re in the business of practical resilience — and it starts with these calm, everyday habits.
