EMPs (electromagnetic pulses) are short, intense, bursts of electromagnetic energy that have been weaponised in bombs to damage or destroy electronic devices and disrupt communications over widespread areas. EMP weapons can greatly damage unprotected infrastructure in a country and in a war scenario could collapse the functionality of electrical networks.
The first human-made EMP bomb was tested in 1962 in the Starfish Prime test, where a 1.4 megaton bomb was detonated above the Pacific, which resulted in damage to electrical equipment more than 1,400 kilometres away. This test served as a warning of what might happen if Earth’s magnetic field was blasted with a high dose of radiation.
In 2020 a report was written by Dr Peter Vincent Pry, Executive Director of the EMP Task Force on National and Homeland Security, suggesting that China have EMP weapons in their arsenal, more robust than any held by the United States, understand how to protect themselves from any EMP attacks, and have developed protocols to conduct a first-strike attack.
