The newly appointed head of Labour’s defence review George Robertson, former NATO secretary general, has recently said that the UK must be prepared to take on a “deadly quartet” of China, Russia, Iran and North Korea. The four nations are increasingly working together, and the UK and its NATO allies must be able to “confront that particular quartet”. These four nations are considered the most hostile to the West.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer recently attended the NATO summit in Washington, where he indicated that the UK has an “enduring and unwavering commitment to the NATO alliance” and Britain will play a “full role” in the alliance. An additional 2.5% of GDP on defence has also been confirmed as “essential” for all members.

Last week, US President, Joe Biden, commented that China’s president must understand that “there’s a price to pay” for continuing to assist Russia in the war in Ukraine. Iran and North Korea have also supplied drones and artillery shells respectively to Russia.
As of Sunday the 14th of July, China and Russia have also started joint naval drills, days after NATO allies called Beijing a “Ukraine war enabler”.
